ITEC810: Information Technology Project Unit

These pages serve as an entry point for information about ITEC808, ITEC809, ITEC810, and ITEC811, known as the ITEC project units. These pages will often use the term `ITEC810' as a collective shorthand for all these units; see here for an explanation of the differences between the units.

Getting Started

  1. Make sure you are completely familiar with the content of the official Unit Outline.

  2. Note that we will be using Moodle as the central web-based communication point for this unit. If you are enrolled in the unit, it is essential that you check the Moodle site once a day, since important information will always be posted there in the News Forum. You should be able to login to Moodle using your MQ student ID and password; if you experience any problems, contact the Faculty of Science IT Help Desk.

  3. The core of this unit is a project. Currently available projects are listed here. Note that you are expected to have made substantial progress on identifying your project by the end of the first week of semester.

  4. Classes will be held in building E5A room 131, with the exception of the end-of-semester workshop in the last week of semester, whose location will be advertised nearer the event. Classes are held on Friday evenings from 6pm to 9pm in what are usually referred to as Weeks 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 of semester; note that for this unit you are also expected to be working on your project during the recess, so there are really 15 weeks that are relevant. Make sure you are familiar with the class schedule.

  5. See this page for an explanation of how the assessment for the unit works. Note that there is a Progress Report due on Friday 7th August, i.e. the end of Week 1.

  6. The unit culminates in an end-of-semester workshop where everyone gives a presentation on their project. The provisional schedule for this semester's workshop is available here. You can see what last semester's workshop was like here, including the slide presentations that were used.

Other Resources

A significant proportion of the class time in this unit focusses on communication skills, but we don't have the time or space to go into some matters in as much detail as some people would like. If you would like to improve your facility for writing in particular, you should check out the Writing Skills program. Or, you may want to consider enrolling in one or more of the following units on offer in the Department of Linguistics, either concurrently with this unit or before taking it:

The first of these is particularly useful if your first language is not English; the second is useful both for those whose first language is English and those for whom it is not.
