ITEC810 Sample Assignment Submissions

This page collects together some samples of the kinds of things that are expected as submissions to the various assignments for ITEC810.

1 Project Proposals

Bear in mind that none of these are perfect solutions: they all have good points and bad points, but the good points significantly outweight the bad points.

• A Platform for Citation Analytics: an example I made up by converting a real proposal written for another purpose.

• Web Analytics Dashboard and Analysis System, by Daniela Fernandez Palacios, an ITEC811 student in the 2009H1 class. This scored 4.5 out of 5.

• Inferring Document Structure, by Weiyen Lin, an ITEC810 student in the 2009H1 class. This scored 4 out of 5.

• Applying Social Networking to the Enterprise, by Sidney Shek, an ITEC808 student in the 2009H1 class. This scored 4 out of 5.

2 Reviews of Sources

• Daniela Fernandez once more gains top marks for her review of sources, scoring 13 out of 15.

• Sidney Shek stays in the top three, scoring 12.5 out of 15.

• Stuart Stent knocks Weiyen Lin out of the top three with 12 out of 15.

3 Workshop Papers

Here are some examples of what typical workshop papers look like. None of these is perfect, and discussion of what you see as their weaknesses is encouraged on the Workshop Paper Discussion Forum on the Moodle site.

• The Nature of Requests and Commitments in Email Messages: Note that this paper doesn't use section numbers, because the event it was submitted to made use of a style that didn't include section numbers.

• What's the Date? High Accuracy Interpretation of Weekday Names: This paper spends quite a bit of time on setting the context and introducing the problem before it gets to the Related Work section.

• Producing Summaries Tailored to the Citation Context: This paper is quite a bit longer than your workshop paper, but the overall structure is the same.

4 Ethics Assignment

Here are some examples of good responses to the ethics task. By good I mean here that the authors have provided a good discussion of their personal stance, and a good discussion of how the ACM Code of Ethics relates to the scenario that was outlined; a good response also discusses how or whether the Code needs changes. My assessment of these as good has no bearing on the particular ethical stance that the author takes.
