Faculty of Science and Engineering

Get ahead with a Bridging Course!

Our bridging courses provide learning support, a useful refresher, and a solid foundation for your university studies.

We are pleased to be offering courses in chemistry, mathematics and lab skills. There is a range of course options available.

No physics bridging course will be run in 2017. Students are instead recommended to take MATH130 in Term 1 and PHYS130 in Term 2.

These courses are a fantastic opportunity to get to know your fellow students and academics, brush up on your maths and science skills and gain the foundational knowledge you'll need to progress through your first years science studies at Macquarie.

We hope to see you there!

Chemistry Bridging Course

Is this for me?

The chemistry bridging course is for students who are studying science at university but did not study chemistry at HSC level; for those needing to gain confidence in chemistry; and for those students who want a refresher course in chemistry.

It is excellent preparation for CBMS104 (Biomolecules) and CBMS107 (Foundations of Chemical and Biomolecular Sciences 1).

The bridging course covers the following topics:

  • Atoms: elements and chemical change, atomic structure, the periodic table.
  • Molecules: bonding, structure and shape, electronegativity.
  • Stoichiometry: mole concept, balancing chemical equations, molarity.
  • Reactions: types, mechanism including arrow pushing, Lewis acids and bases.

Kick start your technical lab skills

Is this for me?

The Kick start your technical lab skills workshop is for students who are studying science at Macquarie University but did not study science at HSC level; for those needing to gain confidence in their technical lab skills; and for those students who want a refresher course in technical lab skills.

The laboratory skills workshop will develop a range of practical skills for the science laboratory, delivered ahead of the formal learning period. A suite of techniques will be demonstrated and practiced across two intensive days. Students during the two-day period will be asked to follow set procedures and methods, and apply well-developed technical skills, basic scientific knowledge and become familiar with Work Health and Safety requirements.
Please note this workshop is only for those who will be studying at Macquarie University in 2016.

What will I learn?
The Laboratory Skills Workshop will cover a range of essential first year laboratory skills including:

  • Laboratory and chemical safety
  • Aseptic techniques
  • Microscopy and microimagery
  • Making solutions
  • Basic molecular skills
  • Record and present data
  • Health and safety
  • Histology for light microscopy
  • Teamwork and communication with peers

What will I need to bring?
Students will need to provide their own lunch. Students are also advised to bring a pen and paper to take notes.
