Getting to Robert and Annie's House

These instructions assume you are driving. If you want to use public transport, you may be in for a long ride. There are bus routes from a variety of directions that converge on Mona Vale, from where you can also take a bus to Church Point; check out the Sydney Buses website. There's no nearby train station. There are no public ferries that run from Sydney Harbour to the Island.

  1. Use Google Maps to get you to Church Point Ferry Wharf, which is at the southern end of Pittwater. The most scenic routes are those that go along McCarr's Creek Road (the edge of Ku-ring-gai National Park) or along the Wakehurst Parkway. We prefer McCarr's Creek Road (exit Mona Vale Road at Terrey Hills), although you should watch out for cyclists on the many bends, especially at weekends, and increase your travel time estimates accordingly. And if you return this way at dusk or later, please drive more slowly and watch out for the wallabies, many of whom are killed crossing the road.

The travel time estimates from Google Maps are pretty good, but you also need to leave time to find parking ...

  2. At Church Point, find a place to park. There's pay parking in the big lot next to the Pasadena Hotel (large rectangular pink building on the waterfront), but it can be hard to find a space on weekends. It's ok to wait at the car park entrance for bodies who might be departing and ask if you can have their space, but you may be just as well to park further away and walk back.

On-street parking in the area is free if you can find a space where parking is legal: read the signs carefully. It's almost certain that the nearest on-street parking will be up Eastview Road: note that Eastview Road ends at a set of steps that take you back down to Church Point, so you don't have to walk back down the long way via the road you drove up. Make sure you don't park anywhere that would cause a car passing your parked car to cross the double white lines in the middle of the road, a sure way to get a parking fine around here.

  3. From the Church Point Public Wharf (near the little store) you can either take a ferry (see the timetable; $15 return for adults, and $7.50 for children and concessions) or take a water taxi ($29 one way for up to six people, so already cheaper than the ferry if you have a party of four adults). You want to go to Tennis Court Wharf.

When you get to Church Point, you can call the water taxi on 0428 238 190; just tell the driver you'd like a taxi at Church Point and going to Tennis. You shouldn't have to wait any more than 5-10 minutes for the taxi to appear at the end of the wharf. The taxi is more fun than the ferry; if you want to try both, best come by taxi and leave by ferry, since that means you can be more flexible about when you arrive at Church Point.

If you have a reasonable number of people note that you can buy a '13 trip' ferry ticket for $61, and you can use this for multiple people: this works out at about $10 per person for a return trip, but of course you will all need to be coming back on the same ferry too.

  4. When you get off at Tennis, walk along the wharf then about 20 meters up the slightly inclined road. Just after the telephone box on your right you'll see the road divides, with the left fork swinging back. Take the left fork and walk for 5-8 mins. The house you want is the wooden pole house on the right hand side of the road just before the 90 degree bend in the road. Here's the target on Google Maps. There are no street names or house numbers anywhere, but for what it's worth, the address is 46 Florence Terrace.

If this is all too complicated to handle, just give Robert a call on 0413 383 248 or 9997 2531 before you leave Church Point and he will come pick you up from Tennis.
