Macquarie University (MQ) has again been ranked as a leading institution in the highly regarded 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), being named within the Top 200 universities worldwide.

International Research Training Program scholarship (IRTP) 

Successful IRTP candidates will receive:

  • Tuition fee offset for 3 years maximum
  • Stipend (tax exempt, indexed annually stipend, 2018 rate $27,082 pa)
  • Single standard Overseas Student Health Cover
  • Travel Concession (local transport OPAL Card)
International Macquarie University Research Training Program scholarship (IMQRTP) 

Successful IMQRTP candidates will receive:

  • Tuition fee offset for 3 years maximum
  • Stipend (tax exempt, indexed annually stipend, 2018 rate $27,082 pa)

NOTE: The main scholarship round for domestic candidates is the Research Training Program scholarship (RTP). Applicants applying for a RTP may be automatically considered for a University funded Macquarie University Research Training Program scholarship (MQRTP) in the same round. No allocation reference numbers apply. Applicants should refer to main round scholarships as '(year) RTP/MQRTP' on their application.

Macquarie also offers a limited number of scholarships to international Master of Research candidates (MRes) candidates applying for an MRes/PhD 'bundle' (i.e. MRes Year 2 and 3-year PhD) through this competitive IRTP round. Successful candidates will be awarded a provisional PhD offer, and they will be considered for a 3 year PhD scholarship on a competitive basis upon successful completion of MRes Year 2.

Successful candidates will receive:

  • Scholarship for tuition fees for up to 3 years
  • Stipend while on campus at Macquarie University
  • Travel Allowance
  • Stipend (tax free, indexed annually stipend, 2018 rate $26,288 pa)
  • PhD degrees from both the Cotutelle partner university and Macquarie University

Macquarie University (MQ) in partnership with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) will jointly offer a number of postgraduate research scholarships for 3 years full time PhD research. These scholarships are worth $26,288 pa (CSC scholarship + top up to RTP award rate) in living allowance, plus tuition fees. Successful candidates may commence their PhD at Macquarie University from July 2017, subject to confirmation of CSC approval and support.

A PhD student could receive the funds of up to AU$10k for international conference travel ($5000 from university and $5000 from faculty) during the program. There are two rounds of applications each year.

Research interests

An interest in any of computer science, mathematics, information technology, information system, as well as business intelligence and management, and bioinformatics is necessary. Other data science related disciplines would be also welcome.


Admission to PhD program
  • A Master of Philosophy in MQ; OR
  • At least 75% in second year of the MQ Master of Research (MRes); OR
  • A two-year (or more) Master research degree with 50% research

NOTE: Candidates who have not completed an MRes degree and do not meet the above criteria may be asked to undertake the Master of Research as a research training pathway to the new Doctoral degree. Candidates with previous study at Bachelor Honours or Masters level may receive credit towards the MRes for a maximum of 50% of the program. The period of candidature for the new PhD will be 3 years.


Admission to the Master of Philosophy
  • At least 65% in second year of the MQ MRes; OR
  • Applicants with Master's degree (at least two years) from another institution with major research component (at least 50% thesis, approx. 20,000 words) at Credit level.

An international applicant needs an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with minimum 6.0 in each band (or an equivalent overall score of 237 in Computer-based TOEFL, 580 in Paper-based TOEFL, or overall 92 in internet-based TOEFL). This requirement is waived if you have obtained a Bachelor or Master degree from an English-speaking country, e.g., Canada, USA, UK, Australia etc.
