Dr. Peter Busch

I am a Senior Lecturer with the Department of Computing in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University. I am active in the Intelligent Systems Group.

I am also the chair for the Faculty of Science and Engineering Human Research Ethics (sub) Committee.

My office location is E6A 320.

Education

I have a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Geography (Physical and Human) and German from the University of Adelaide. After a summer stint at the South Australian Brewing Company, I gained a part time position at the University's Barr-Smith Library. The latter employer (and some might say the former) was to have an effect on the career path chosen next.

After gaining my BA, I decided I wanted to become a university librarian. The best course for me at the time seemed to be the Master of Arts in Librarianship offered by the then Graduate School of Librarianship at Monash University. Sadly there seem to be no graduate schools in librarianship existing today in Australia (unlike the U.S. and Canadian systems). The general philosophy behind university librarianship is that one is required to have a university degree in something before one attempts librarianship as a graduate discipline. My masters thesis was actually a logical extension of what I had majored in as an undergraduate, and naturally enough also included librarianship. The title was: German-Born Persons and their use of Public Library Resources in Melbourne: A Case Study. This dissertation examined the Germans as an ethnic minority group (where ethnic in the Australian context refers to non Anglo-Celtic), their settlement patterns and use of public library utilities. During my masters I also worked at the Hargrave Library, which is the science and technology library on the Clayton campus. This experience, coupled with working for a short while in Mechanical Engineering at Monash gave me the idea I needed to understand technology better.

My next move was then into information technology. I thus undertook a Graduate Diploma of Science (IT) at the University of Tasmania. I had wanted to see Tasmania for a number of years and now I had good grounds for doing so. After my Grad. Dip. I decided to stay on and complete Honours. For the following five years I was an Associate Lecturer at the University there.

The time came to undertake a Ph.D. in my field (Information Systems) and to that end I came to Macquarie University to study with the late Assoc. Prof. C.N.G. 'Kit' Dampney. Kit was later to move to the University of Newcastle and unfortunately passed away in March of 2004 some two days after thesis submission. My Ph.D. thesis was on the Knowledge Management Implications of Articulable Tacit Knowledge: Case Studies on its Diffusion. The dissertation examined intra-organisational soft knowledge flows in the ICT arena and the organisational learning implications this would have for knowledge capital. I have been an academic at Macquarie now since 2002.

Finally, I have also recently completed a university teaching qualification, namely the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) taught by the Institute for Teaching and Learning, at the University of Sydney.

Research

I am in the area of Information Systems rather than Computer Science per se. Information Systems is a discipline that encompasses basically three main areas of databases, systems analysis and design and IS management. My research area tends to fall under the third topic. More specifically I am focused on Knowledge Management, including the following areas:

  • Knowledge Management
  • Knowledge Acquisition and Reuse
  • Knowledge Capital
  • Qualitative Modelling
  • Organisational Learning
  • Visualisation and Navigation of Large Lattices
  • Databases and Information Systems

Recreation

  • I have an interest in European/western swords. So before you ask, no I don't collect or read a great deal on Japanese swords. There's nothing wrong with them, they're just not my area of interest. Such an attitude is not unusual for people in this general area. Japanese sword people usually won't look twice at western swords. I have contributed articles to swordforum.com. One example deals with the 1828 pattern Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword. I have also written for the Oakeshott Institute, named in honour of the great Ewart Oakeshott. The article with the Oakeshott Institute was on the 1831 pattern British General Officers Ivory Hilted Scimitar. Another excellent sword related link is that of myarmoury.com, particularly for those with an interest in mediaeval or to a lesser degree renaissance era western swords.

  • I am fortunate in having German as a second language; of course it helps having German parents! I also enjoy going to the gym and reading, particularly non-fiction.
