Natural Language Generation for Aboriginal Languages

There are a number of research projects around the world where the goal is to generate a textual description of some numerical data using artificial intelligence techniques. This kind of scenario of generating from data allows the investigation of a lot of interesting research questions, especially concerning the relationship between human language and its processing by computers. We're interested in exploring these for an Australian Aboriginal language, Arrernte, along with a parallel version for English. Given the extensive interest in Aboriginal communities in Australian Football League (AFL), and the AFL's well-known interest in indigenous issues through the AFL Foundation and elsewhere, the domain of AFL games seems like a natural fit. Ultimately, we would like to work with the community to see how such a system could be used in literacy and language maintenance.
