Scholarships offered in the Faculty of Science
Biology Summer Research Experience Scholarships
These scholarships are available on academic merit to students enrolled in biology undergraduate programs. The purpose of the scholarships is to provide project-based work experience opportunities during the summer vacation.
The scholarships are valued at $275 per week for 2–10 weeks depending on the duration of the student’s work experience project.

Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences Vacation Research Scholarship
These scholarships are open to Biomolecular Sciences and Chemistry undergraduate students. They are available during the summer period (December – February) for four weeks, with extensions available by negotiation with individual lecturers. Applications are ranked on the basis of academic merit. The scholarships provide the opportunity for undergraduate students at any level to participate in cutting-edge research. Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences Scholarship
This scholarship is available to students enrolling in a Bachelor degree with a Major in either Biomolecular Sciences or Chemistry. It is
valued at $1000 per year and is available for up to three years subject to satisfactory progress. For further details contact the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences on (02) 9850 8275.
Le Fevre Scholarship in Chemistry
This scholarship is available to full-time students undertaking a Bachelors degree with a Major in Chemistry. Scholarship recipients
will be required to enrol in the following units during the period of the scholarship:
- Year 1: CBMS102, CBMS103
- Year 2: CBMS204, CBMS207, CBMS208
- Year 3: 18 credit points of CBMS units and meet the requirements of the Major in Chemistry.
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit in the HSC. It is tenable for three years, subject to satisfactory progress, at the following rates:
- $2000 in the first year, $2100 in the second year
- $2200 in the third year of the scholarship.

Doris Wallent Scholarship in Mathematics
Doris Wallent had a special interest in promoting women in mathematics and education. She was also a part time lecturer and tutor at Macquarie University. The Department of Mathematics awards the scholarship for excellence in mathematics in the NSW/ACT HSC to a first-year student enrolled in MATH132 and MATH133. The scholarship is valued at $1000.

Optus Engineering Scholarships
Optus has provided two scholarships for students enrolling into the Bachelor of Engineering at Macquarie University for 2010. These scholarships are worth $5000 per year for each of the four years throughout the degree.
As a part of this scholarship students will have the opportunity to undergo paid work with Optus for a minimum of 12 weeks through the program degree. This will contribute to the work experience requirements for graduates as outlined by Engineers Australia.
Anyone applying to enrol in first year engineering at Macquarie University in 2010 may apply for the Optus scholarship. The criteria for short-listing will be based on a CV and letter of application followed by an interview with Optus staff. The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis.

Physics Vacation Scholarships
Physics vacation scholarships are available for 6-7 weeks in January/February to students enrolling in a major in either Physics, Photonics or Astronomy and Astrophysics. Supervised vacation research projects are available in:

Further information about Prizes offered in the Faculty of Science
Arthur Pryor Prize
- Arthur Pryor was a brilliant student of Physics and Electrical Engineering. His career took him to the UK, New Zealand and back to Australia. He made major research contributions in under-water acoustics, neutron and thermal physics. He co-authored “Thermal Vibrations in Crystallography” and shared the 1964 Syme Prize, with AINSE co-workers, awarded for the best science contribution in any discipline in Australia.
Dick Makinson Prize
- Dick Makinson was a University of Sydney medallist in Physics and Mathematics in 1935. He completed a PhD at Cambridge University and undertook an academic career at both Sydney and Macquarie Universities.
Fredrick Chong Prize
- Frederick Chong enjoyed a dazzling reputation as a teacher and brought to Macquarie a refined interest in program planning and curriculum. He retired in 1980 and was made an Emeritus Professor that same year.
- Emeritus Professor Jan Hext was the inaugural Professor of Computing at Macquarie University, where he taught for 17 years. He had a special interest in programming languages in Computer Science.The Department of Computing awards the Jan Hext Prize for proficiency in course that relate to progamming languages.
J.C. Ward Prize
- John Clive Ward was perhaps one of the most brilliant British physicists of the post war era. He was a contributor to the Standard Model and the creator of the famed 'Ward Identities'. His contribution to the field is discussed in several well-known books dealing with theoretical and particle physics.
Peter Mason Prize
- Peter Mason was a foundation Professor of Physics at Macquarie University. He was a prominent author, ABC science communicator, and respected commentator on science, technology and society. He gave the first lecture at Macquarie University.
W H “Beattie” Steel Prize
- Beattie Steel gained the highest French doctorate for his work on Fourier Transform methods at L’Institut d’Optique in Paris. He was President of the International Commission of Optics, author of “Interferometry” and a winner of the Mees Medal, given by the Optical Society of America. He led Optics research at CSIRO, Lindfield for 30 years and he continued this as an Honorary Professor at Macquarie University
