Progress and Reporting

Departmental Progress Review

It is important to you and to the Faculty of Science that you submit your thesis within the timeframe of your candidature, or if you are a scholarship holder, to submit before your scholarship expires. To assist you with on-time submission, departments in the Faculty require you to report regularly on how your are progressing with your research so the department can monitor your progress and provide feedback. Progress reviews are conducted either 6 monthly (at the end of each semester), or annually in September/October/November. The departmental progress review may consist of a seminar presentation, and/or a written progress report, and/or an interview with a panel of academics of the department. Supervisory arrangements, feedback on your progress to date, and advice on future progress are all part of the departmental progress review. The particular requirements and procedures of departmental progress reviews vary across the Faculty, so you should contact your Departmental Director, HDR for specific information.

Annual Progress Report (APR)

Each year you are also required to complete and submit an Annual Progress Report (APR). The report is an important and formal tool for the University and the Faculty to monitor and evaluate each research candidate’s progress. Failure to submit an APR on time may result in the candidate having to show cause and scholarship holders may have their award terminated.

The APR should accurately reflect your progress, and record any difficulties or problems encountered. The report should also accurately record the frequency and type of contact between you and your supervisor. Scholarship holders must signal any research-related delays and complete the relevant details in the APR in case an extension of the scholarship is needed.

At the end of the annual progress review process, you will be sent a copy of the APR, which will also include the comments of the Faculty’s Associate Dean, HDR on the cover page. If a further review of progress in three or six months time is recommended, it will be indicated there.
