Recruitment - Types of Employment
Staff are normally appointed as academic or general staff in one of three employment types:
- continuing (full-time or part time - min 3hrs pw)
- fixed-term (full-time or part-time)
- casual/sessional (maximum term is 12 months at a time)
Part-time staff work regular hours each week or fortnight (minimum 3 hours on a day). Casual staff are only be appointed where the work requires ad-hoc hours. Casual appointments lapse at the end of each calendar year or they may be terminated with one hour notice.

Duties and Levels of Academic and General Staff
Academic: Teaching and Research staff are normally (but not exclusively) employed on a continuing basis on one of the following levels:
- Level A - Associate Lecturer
- Level B - Lecturer
- Level C - Senior Lecturer
- Level D - Associate Professor
- Level E - Professor
Academic: Research Only staff usually carry the title 'Research Fellow' and may be paid on any of the above Levels according to qualifications and experience as determined in accordance with the Minimum Standards for Academic Levels and relevant Discipline Profile (MSALs) - see Enterprise Agreement. Research Only academic staff who are recipients of fellowship awards will carry the title of the award:
- ARC Australian Postdoctoral Fellow (APD)
- ARC Australian Research Fellow (ARF)
- ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellow (QEII)
- ARC Professorial Fellow (APF)
- ARC Australian Laureate Fellow
- ARC Future Fellow
- MQ Research Fellow
- MQ Vice Chancellors Innovation Fellow (MQVCIF)
- etc
General staff are usually employed for roles in administration, IT support, laboratory support and other non-academic duties. They may also be employed as research assistants on research grants if appointment as a Research Fellow on the academic scale is not appropriate. General staff are paid according to the level of responsibility required for the work (Level 1-10). The levels are assessed in accordance with General Staff Position Classification Descriptors.
