Recruitment - Budgeting for & Costing Appointments
- Fixed-term and continuing staff accrue leave at the rate of 2.683hrs pw (ie one week every three months) or pro-rata for part-time. If there is unused leave at the end of the appointment it will paid out as a lump sum. Therefore an allowance must be made for this expense in the budget (see example below) OR alternatively, you must ensure that the staff member takes all leave before the end of the appointment. In this case you should request, on the appointment form, that HR include a clause in the contract that all leave is to be taken prior to the end of the contract. Adequate notice must still be given to the staff member to take the leave and any accrued leave not taken will still be paid out.
- Fixed term severance is no longer charged directly to grants. A small oncost is levied on all temporary appointments to cover this from central funds.
- The casual hourly loaded rate is made up of the hourly rate based on annual salary plus a 24% loading in lieu of annual and personal leave. The loading is not the oncost.
Sample budget for fixed-term Academic Level A6 from 28/3/11 - 24/6/11
$1,349.87 (weekly salary) x 1.1850 (on-cost) x 13 (weeks) = $20794.75
PLUS $1,599.60 x 1 week (contingency for unused annual leave) = $1,599.60
Total cost of appointment = $22,394.35
Sample budget for Casual General Staff Level 5.1 for 70 hrs from 4/4/2011
$37.67 (loaded hourly rate from enterprise agreement) x 1.1645 (on-cost) x 70 hours = $3070.67. No contingency is required for leave as the loaded rate incorporates this.
When quoting a salary to an applicant for fixed-term or continuing appointment only use the figures in the Enterprise Agreement. When quoting a 'package' use the salary in the Enterprise Agreement plus relevant superannuation and annual leave loading.
When quoting a salary to an applicant for casual appointment use the relevant loaded casual hourly rate from the enterprise agreement.
