Recruitment - Appointing Staff

For documentation and process required to appoint fixed-term and casual staff refer to the appointment grid. This includes

(a) tests by which to determine whether to make a fixed-term or casual appointment
(b) tests by which to determine whether it will be academic or general
(c) which forms to use and links
(d) which documents to attach for an initial appointment

Such documentation is to be completed in the Department and recommended by the HOD before being submitted to the Faculty HR Manager at least ten days prior to the commencement date. It is to be accompanied by a salary budget and copy of account details showing funds available. If the position is being filled as a result of interview, an interview selection report must be sent with the apointment form.

Determining the Level and Step of Appointment

Academic Staff
For appointment at a particular level the appointee must meet the Mimimum Standards for Academic Level (MSAL) for that level (see Schedule 6 of the MQEA). The appointee must also meet the requirements of the Department's Discipline Profile at the relevant Level. If there is any doubt over whether the appointee meets the requirements for the desired level of appointment the CV can be referred to the Division's Associate Dean Research for assessment.

For General staff the level of appointment is determined by the Position. Positions Descriptions are graded by HR on the basis of the General Staff Position Classification Descriptors (see Schedule 5 of the MQEA. These are The appointee must meet the selection criteria for the position to be appointed. Positions Descriptions must be written for all new positions and must be graded before an appointment can be made.
