Wireless Communications and Networking Laboratory

Heritage

The Wireless Communications and Networking Laboratory (WCNL) at Macquarie University conducts research into emerging wireless communications and networking technologies.  It follows in the footsteps of Radiata Communications, Macquarie University's most successful IT-related commercial startup and the subsequent Integrated Wireless Communications Systems (iWCS) research group. Radiata was founded by two (currently adjunct) professors of the Department of Physics and Engineering in 1998, Neil Weste and David Skellern, who successfully commercialised their wireless IEEE 802.11 compatible LAN technology. The company was bought by the communications giant Cisco Systems for a record $US295 million. iWCS led by A.Prof. Linda Davis continued with wireless research at Macquarie University focusing on the exciting new area of 60Ghz wireless networking technology. The Wireless Communications and Networking Laboratory is proud to continue with the world-class wireless research at Macquarie University. Our current research focus is on wireless body area networks for medical applications and on cognitive radio networks for next generation mobile communications systems.

Vision

To provide the environment for a top international centre for wireless communications and networking research, strongly aligned to premier wireless research institutions around the world and providing research outputs of relevance to our industry partners.

Mission

To pursue world-class research into next generation of wireless communications and networking technologies and to train top-quality research students.
