Stratifications of abelian categories

We motivate the definition of a recollement of abelian categories and present some new results about abelian categories that can be decomposed into smaller categories using recollement. In particular we give necessary and sufficient conditions for such a category to be equivalent to a category of finite dimensional modules of a finite dimensional algebra and describe the representation theory of algebras arising in this way.
