Towards character sheaves

Lusztig's theory of character sheaves is a geometric analogue of the ordinary (semisimple) representation theory of a finite group of Lie type. It would be desirable to have a theory of modular character sheaves that helped us understand (non-semisimple) modular representations. As I will explain, this appears to involve understanding the centre of a monoidal category beyond the abelian category setting.
