Keith Imrie graduated BSc(Hons) from the University of New England (Armidale) in 1958, and PhD in 1962, working on a novel high-power transmitter (with assistance from an ICIANZ Research Fellowship). He then spent 1962-1964 at the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories, Jodrell Bank, in a radar-astronomy group (with assistance from a Rutherford Memorial Scholarship of the Royal Society). For 1965-1971 he became a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, and developed equipment for teaching and the Fleurs Field Station. From 1972-2005 he was a Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University, developing material for a wide range of Electronics teaching. In 2006 he ceased teaching, retaining a part-time position with various administrative duties.
