I obtained my B.Sc. at Newcastle University College and spent the first 6 years of my working life as a secondary school science teacher. I came to Macquarie University in 1970, as a senior tutor in physics, and have been here ever since, apart from periods of study leave or similar activities. These have included visits to the University of Leiden (1979), the University of Wales, Bangor (1989 and 1992), Pennstate University (1996), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (1998) and the University of Wales again in 1999.

I am a member of the Australian Institute of Physics and currently serve on the committee of the NSW state branch; I am also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (USA).
